Every spring, the daffodil shoots out of the ground again to announce early spring. To ensure that the daffodil keeps coming back every year, you should plant it in the most favourable spot in your garden. Like many flower bulbs, the daffodil prefers to be in the sun. Six hours of sunlight per day ensures that the daffodil, even after flowering, can start working on developing new flowers. The daffodil is therefore busy for you all year round.
When to plant daffodils?
Daffodils are planted in the fall (when the leaves fall from the trees), because they bloom in the spring. Make sure you plant them before the frost.
For a square meter you need about 40 daffodil bulbs for the best result. If you have miniature daffodil bulbs such as Tete a Tete, keep 80 bulbs per square meter.
- Loosen the soil well and mix it with a special fertilizer for flower bulbs before you plant the daffodil bulbs in the ground.
- Dig a trench a few centimetres deep and keep a distance of about 5 to 10 centimetres between the two flower bulbs. This will prevent the daffodils from growing too close together.
- Plant the daffodil bulbs with the point facing up and firmly secure them in the ground.
- Give a little water immediately and continue to do this regularly.
- Also make sure that the daffodil is in well-drained soil, because soil that is too wet is fatal for them.
Caring for daffodils
After flowering, you should cut off the withered flowers so that all the energy goes to the bulb. The bulb can then provide extra beautiful flowers in the following growing season. In this way, you ensure that you can enjoy your daffodils for years to come.
