You plant an amaryllis with the bottom half of the bulb in the soil. Use regular potting soil that is suitable for garden or houseplants. Also make sure you have a spacious pot so that there is enough space around the amaryllis bulb to water it. Do not fill the pot all the way to the edge with potting soil, so that the water cannot run out of the pot when watering.
After planting, the neck of the bulb will stick out above the ground and above the pot (see photo below). Then place the pot with the amaryllis bulb in a warm place, preferably near the heater, so that the roots can develop well. Keep the soil fairly moist, just like with your other plants, not too wet but also not too dry. Depending on the variety, the amaryllis bulb will flower within 6 to 8 weeks.
Amaryllis on glass
You can also plant your amaryllis in a vase or glass pot, without soil. The amaryllis will then be forced to bloom on water (see photo above). You will need a suitable glass vase for this, which will hold the amaryllis bulb firmly while the roots hang in the water. Make sure that the water just touches the bottom of the bulb, which will also stimulate new roots to emerge from the bulb.
A few days after you put the bulb in water, the water will become cloudy and slightly reddish. No problem, refresh the water, rinse the roots and put the bulb back on the glass. Sometimes you have to repeat this but after that the water will remain clear and fresh. For more information about the Amaryllis bulb, look at amaryllis care .
Amaryllis after flowering
Getting an amaryllis to bloom again is not easy. Fluwel guarantees you spectacular blooming during the first year. However, blooming in subsequent years cannot be guaranteed. If you still want to try to get your amaryllis bulb to bloom the following year, read the page keeping amaryllis for more information.
