Alliumbollen

Allium is also often called ornamental onion. There are many different types of allium , not all of which are suitable for the garden. We have already made a selection for you of ornamental onions that do look beautiful in the garden.

Allium Giganteum

The most well-known species of ornamental onion is probably the Allium Giganteum . This flower can reach an impressive height of one and a half to almost two meters! The flowers bloom in a ball, which can be up to five centimeters in diameter. This species is a great eye-catcher in any garden with its beautiful, purple color.

Allium Sphaerocephalon

If you don't need such tall flowers, then we still have a lot of choice for you. The Allium Sphaerocephalon, for example, grows to a maximum height of 70 cm. This is still an impressive height for a flower and the Allium Sphaerocephalon will certainly attract the attention of passers-by to your garden.

Allium Unifolium Eros

This allium grows a little less tall than the Giganteum and the Sphaerocephalon and is therefore more manageable in the garden. What we like so much about this species are the quirky flowers. These small, lilac-coloured flowers grow (like most alliums) in a spherical shape. But where, for example, the Allium Giganteum is a really solid sphere, the Allium Unifolium Eros has a more open growth form and flowers that grow in all directions.

Allium in the garden

There are many types of allium and they all have different properties. A few things are similar. All alliums love a lot of sunlight and it is best to plant the allium in a sunny spot. Alliums grow well between perennials, but they must stick their heads out above the rest.
