Tulpenvelden in bloei

The colourful Dutch tulip fields are now famous all over the world. From the end of March to the beginning of May, the large polders along the Dutch coast change into breathtakingly colourful patchworks. One flowering tulip is beautiful, a hundred flowering tulips is even more beautiful, but imagine millions of tulips blooming at the same time.

The months of April and May have become perhaps the most visited tourist attractions in the world. The blooming tulip fields, combined with the Keukenhof and idyllic Amsterdam, attract visitors from all over the world.

When do tulips bloom?

Would you like to see the tulip fields bloom? Let that overwhelming emotion come over you when you see tulips blooming all the way to the horizon? Then plan your visit in the second half of April.

You can also be lucky at the end of March or the beginning of April, but in a cold spring it can happen that no tulips are blooming then. It is the same at the beginning of May. In a warm spring almost all tulips can be cut off by that time.

Where do the tulip fields bloom?

Head of North Holland
The most beautiful tulip fields can be found in the head of North Holland. Between the village of Burgervlotbrug on the N9, just above Alkmaar, and Den Helder, located further north on the N9, lies the largest connected flower bulb area of the Netherlands. No less than 20 kilometers long you are surrounded by flowering flower bulbs.

If you travel further inland from Den Helder towards the rustic villages of Breezand and Anna Paulowna, it is all the same; tulips , daffodils , alliums , hyacinths , all the different flower bulbs can be seen here.

Flevopolder & Northeastpolder
These two areas under the IJsselmeer are very worthwhile. Around the villages of Swifterbant in the Flevopolder and Espel and Creil in the Noordoostpolder you can also find fantastically beautiful tulip fields. This area specializes in the cultivation of tulips, other flower bulbs such as the hyacinth and the daffodil you will not find there.

West Friesland
Also in West Friesland in the villages around Hoorn you can find many tulip fields. Not as massive as in the Northern Sand Area, they are very spread out, but in a beautiful rustic environment with beautiful farms and grazing cows. Around the villages Hoogwoud, Spanbroek, Wognum, Zwaag, Hem and Venhuizen you have the best chance to see blooming tulip fields.

Lisse & The Keukenhof
And then of course around Lisse and the Keukenhof. Here you are in the cradle of Dutch flower bulb cultivation. Today, not nearly as many tulips are grown here as in the north of North Holland and West Friesland. And if you are not visiting the Keukenhof, it might be wiser to avoid this area because of the enormous traffic jams in April.
