Wild tulips

Tulips also grow in the wild, but not in our climate. Tulip bulbs originate from Central Asia, especially in the countries around the Caspian Sea you can find many wild tulips . There it is very cold in the winter, and very hot in the summer. There is a short spring between both seasons. The tulip is prepared to quickly bloom in a sudden transition from cold to heat. After flowering, the tulip collects energy in its bulb to quickly bloom again the following spring.

European climate

In Europe, the climate for tulips is of course very different. That is why tulips do not thrive optimally here: the plant does not survive very long in the European garden, although some tulips can easily grow wild in a garden for a few years. By imitating the climate of Central Asia (where possible) and giving the tulip a helping hand here and there, we can still let this flower bulb flower successfully in our gardens and on the bulb fields.

Keeping tulips

In practice, this means that the tulips need your help. To enjoy a tulip for several years, it is best to store them warmly during the summer months. After the leaves have died, remove the bulbs from the ground, clean them and store them in the shed, garage or in the house. In our blog you can read exactly what you need to do to keep tulips .

If you leave the tulip bulbs in the ground to naturalise, some species will return, but often not as well as in the first year.
