The flowers of Lilium martagon are not really big for a lily, with a diameter of about 5 cm, but they are always with many. Due to its abundance of flowers and elegantly curled flower shape, it is one of the most graceful lilies. It also owes its nickname 'Turkish Lily' or 'Turks Cap Lily' to its beautiful, backward-curved petals; its flowers look a bit like a Turkish cap.
The Lilium martagon grows wild in large parts of Europe and Asia and is therefore not picky about soil type. It does prefer some light shade, not full sun all day. But otherwise it will do well in any reasonable garden soil. The real species Lilium martagon is difficult to propagate and difficult to obtain, fortunately there are a few hybrids on the market that are good in cultivation and also do very well in the garden. Strong and floriferous plants that are certainly worth trying in the garden.
Lilium martagon plants
The Lilium martagon is different from most other Lilies, it MUST be planted in the fall. It also blooms earlier than we are used to from lilies, it is at its most beautiful in the month of June. Because of its early bloom it also finishes growing earlier, the plant dies in August after which it can be dug up and transplanted. The bulb of the Lilium martagon is also somewhat more sensitive to drying out, so you will understand that a bulb that is dug up in September cannot be stored until March before it is planted. The Lilium martagon must be put back in the ground in the fall in order to be able to shine again in June the following year.
Plant the bulbs of the martagon lilies at a depth of at least 10 cm, measured from the top of the bulb.
Consider the Lilium martagon, even more than other lilies, as a perennial. Choose the spot where you are going to plant it well, a bit of sun and a bit of shade. It can also stand very well between somewhat lower perennials. If it is well-placed, leave it alone. Years ago I myself received several martagon lilies from a West Frisian grower, they are half under an elder tree and get the sun in the morning and then stand half in the shade. They are just as beautiful every year as in the first year after planting.
