As with many flowers, the name 'Iris' first appears in Greek mythology. Iris was the messenger of the gods. She traveled from heaven to earth and back again, in the form of a rainbow. It is therefore not surprising that iris bulbs come in all colours. The most well-known type is the iris laevigata, with its characteristic blue-purple colour.

All irises have six petals, three of which are upright and three of which are hanging. The hanging petals are called the lip of the flower. In terms of shape, the iris is therefore very predictable, but that does not mean that the iris bulbs are not worth planting in the garden. With their bright colours, they will certainly brighten up your living environment.

Planting iris bulbs

Irises are therefore quite similar in appearance, but not in properties. For example, each iris species has its own requirements regarding the soil in which it is planted. Some like a wet soil so much that they prefer to stand in a layer of water, others want to keep their feet dry. But what they all have in common is that they prefer to be in full sun.

In this respect, irises are a bit like people. Dig a trench about ten centimetres deep and plant the iris bulbs eight centimetres apart. You should always plant the bulbs with the point upwards, because this is where the flower comes from. Make sure you give the bulbs enough water after planting and continue to do so regularly. Caring for iris bulbs

The best thing is to plant different types of colours together, this gives your garden a colourful appearance. When choosing bulbs that go well together, you should also take into account the specific needs that each type requires. If necessary, you can cut the flowers when they start to bloom around May and put them in a vase. Nothing is more beautiful than a bunch of flowers from your own garden. At the end of the summer, you should remove the old foliage so that the bulb can spend its energy preparing for a new growth and flowering cycle.
