The species eranthis (winter aconite) is very similar to the more well-known buttercups, which can be found in many meadows. The difference is that the eranthis has an even smaller size. The eranthis bulbs are also small, namely no bigger than a pea. That can make planting eranthis difficult. But once planted, these yellow flowers are indestructible.
The eranthis is ideal as a ground cover, because it stays low to the ground and has a lot of leaves, which enclose the yellow flowers like a wreath. The eranthis can even flower when there is still snow. When the sun starts to shine, the 'collar' unfolds and the delicate, golden yellow heads appear. The eranthis may look lovely, but it is stronger than you would expect.
Planting Eranthis - where and when?
You can start planting from September, because the flowering period of the eranthis is from January to March. For all flower bulbs, the earlier you plant, the sooner your bulbs will flower.
Once the frost sets in, it is no longer possible to plant eranthis bulbs . Plant the bulbs in a semi-shaded spot, for example under a tree or shrub, but make sure that sunlight can reach them.
Planting in full sun is also an option. Dig a trench about five centimetres deep and plant the bulbs about seven centimetres apart.
