By planting allium bulbs you can bridge a normally 'flowerless' period and have a beautiful garden almost all year round. An allium likes a well-drained soil and (once they flower) like to be in the sun all day long.

You can add peat moss, compost or composted manure to the soil to improve drainage. But don't worry, a little moisture won't hurt at all. As long as the feet of the allium don't get too wet, you'll be fine.

Dig a shallow trench of about 15 cm deep and loosen the soil well before planting. Place the allium bulbs with the point upwards in the soil and sprinkle a few centimetres of soil over them. Always give the flower bulbs a little water after planting. If you follow these steps, everything should be fine and you will have beautiful alliums in your garden within a few months.

As a potted plant, the allium is not so suitable, so it will not do very well on a balcony or terrace. It is a real garden plant that only feels at home in the open ground.
