Buy Hyacinths

Are you going to buy hyacinth bulbs for the garden? Then you should remember not to buy bulbs that are too big. Our experience is that the bulb size 16/17 centimeters circumference is the most beautiful to plant. The flower clusters of this size are nice and full, but not too heavy, so the chance of falling over is not so great.

If you buy bulbs with a larger bulb size, this is often the case. A size smaller, bulb size 15/16 centimeters circumference, is also fine for the garden. The flower cluster will be somewhat smaller, but still large enough to look good.

Not all hyacinths are suitable for the garden

There are also varieties that we believe are not really suitable for use in the garden. These are varieties with a stem that is simply not strong enough to carry the flower cluster of the Hyacinth. The two most important Hyacinths that are frequently offered but that I think you should not use are the Delft Blue and the China Pink. These two Hyacinths are suitable for the production of cut flowers in the winter months and are therefore grown for that purpose.

The Hyacinth flower has become very popular as a cut flower in recent years and is now, just like the tulip, widely offered in the winter months as a bunch of flowers for the vase or in a mixed bouquet. Unfortunately, flower bulb traders also sometimes offer these varieties for use in the garden. Especially if the price is attractive. But I would really advise against the Delft Blue and China Pink varieties for the garden.
