Freesia Fields Forever

No idea what to talk about this week, first I'll just drive around to see how the Daffodils are at the neighbors. I can easily do a little outing, after all I have the whole evening to write the newsletter. Hey, there's Hoogland busy, just snooping around to see what they're doing.

Speaking of onions, I should have known. We already smelled it when we were working in the fields, the onion campaign has started again. Also a bulbous plant by the way; Allium cepa. Not that different from the Alliums in the Fluwel webshop . The onion that we eat every day can also flower quite nicely. Just plant one in your garden in the spring.

These are plant onions, which are grown from seed in large quantities on sandy soils and then shipped all over the world to be grown locally into delicious onion bulbs.

Then let's take a look at our Daffodils at Jan Hein's nursery, they were also dug up this week and I haven't really looked at them properly yet. That does look a bit different from the Tulips , it simply looks great. Each and every one of them are beautiful fleshy bulbs, they shine up at you. Really a completely different story than the Tulips , where many growers are dealing with major yield drops this year. The Tulip is also a real princess, if there is just one thing wrong with it, the Tulip will be complaining in the field; too dry, too warm, too wet, hungry, thirsty, cold feet, you know how it is, a big complaint. Of course it is not entirely fair to tar all Tulips with the same brush, there are certainly also strong Tulips , but still... even the most seasoned gardener who takes good care of the Tulip with caring cuddles can hardly keep the Tulip alive for several years. But… these princesses are very beautiful to look at.

The Narcissus on the other hand, the Narcissus lives, the Narcissus gives, the Narcissus blooms, the Narcissus grows and the Narcissus fascinates. Year in year out she provides joy in the garden. Wherever you plant her, the Narcissus is satisfied. The Narcissus , that is a flower bulb.

Karel and I will be happily chatting among this ordinary, yet very special flower bulb for the next few weeks.

These are some of my favorite Daffodils :

Say Cheese

In the pot, in the border, in the grass or on the verge, Say Cheese always does what it has to do; delight people with its cute flowers.

Jetfire

Another unyielding little giant in the Narcissus world. Plant her and Jetfire will treat you to many years of viewing pleasure.

Hello Sunshine

Its name sums up exactly what you can expect from Hello Sunshine , nothing more to add.

Tangerine Beauty

This luminous beauty is a real oddball on the menu. Different from all other Daffodils , a colourful rascal, a fantastic braggart. Simply absolutely fantastically beautiful.

It might be interesting for you to know that I am writing all this nonsense at the end of a dazzling and nose-clogging corner of Freesias.

Peeping around at the neighbours has brought me to this breathtaking field and it is so beautiful that I want to wait for the moment that the sun, sinking into the sea, peeps out from under the cloud cover. That seems to me to be a really nice picture, but it will probably take a while, so I got out my notebook and started writing. A quarter past nine now, I calmly wait for it to appear.

Just one more Daffodil then:

Spinner

I couldn't think of a happier Narcissus than Spinner . Big, floppy and always cheerful. In terms of characteristics, a real tough, no-nonsense Narcissus with large flowers that radiate joy.

It's already past 9:30, getting late. I still have to type all this up and mail it away, of course I started way too late again, also had no idea what to blog about.

By the way, it has become dead quiet at the Freesias, you can hear the surf. I am standing here just behind Callantsoog, Uitlandseweg, a small kilometer from the sea. Where is that sun? Yes, now I will stop too, I want to show you. Just one more Daffodil then, no there she comes.

Beautiful, Freesia Fields Forever.
