An odd duck in the pond. At first glance she looks like a fairly normal yellow Daffodil but you can't walk past her without stopping for a moment. You can see that something is wrong, but what is it?
If you look closely you will see that the wax layer is missing on the leaf and flower of this Narcissus, which gives it a kind of plasticized appearance. It is really unique, I have never seen it before in Narcissus, it is a stranger.
When I had a visit a year or so ago from my Spanish-speaking, Chilean-born, Daffodil friend Madelaine, she immediately noticed that there was something different about this Daffodil.
"Gringo is a fitting name for this Narcissus, Carlos. Gringo is used in South America for people who come from other parts of the world, and this Narcissus also seems to come from another world."
I immediately wrote Gringo on the plant stick and requested the name. One of the remarkable points of this 'stranger' is that she does not seem to know when spring is over and that her beautiful flowers can safely die off after a few weeks. Maybe it is because she wants to do her best than the rest because she looks different but it seems as if she never stops blooming.
It's amazing how long it blooms, I really like those Gringos.
