This lily is an oldie, African Queen was already introduced in 1958. At that time she was a true revelation in the lily world. Mr. Jaan de Graaf from Oregon in the United States crossed Lilium henryi with a number of other species lilies originating from China and came up with a number of seedlings that turned the entire lily world upside down. African Queen is one of his seedlings, but Golden Splendor also comes from this nest.

The following text from that time says a lot about how this lily was thought of: This type of lily is exceptionally healthy, hardly suffers from diseases, can withstand cold and frost very well and grows in almost any type of soil. Foolproof lilies. In another book from that time you will find the words: robust, not picky about soil type and climate, healthy and an inexhaustible amount of variation in color and flower shapes. To this day, these words still apply.
