The Begonia bertinii is better known as the 'Farmer's Begonia'.

This incredibly rich and long-lasting flowering Begonia has been in cultivation since 1872. It was won by a certain Mr. Bertin who refined it from the Begonia boliviensis. Because it has been used as a patio plant for generations, this problem-free Begonia enjoys great fame. The Begonia bertinii is really a Begonia for the pot because its ornamental value lies in its hanging shape. Note that despite the fact that it is a hanging Begonia, it can grow to a height of 40 cm. Its growth habit is in the first months with a number of thick stems straight up, after which the side branches hang down along the pot.

The Begonia bertinii can produce quite large tubers over the years, so repotting every few years is advisable.

There are now a few beautiful selections on the market that are easy to grow and flower very profusely:

The red Begonia bertinii Santa Cruz

The pink Begonia bertinii San Francisco

The white Begonia bertinii Santa Barbara
