The first thing that comes to mind for most people when they hear the word Narcissus is those beautiful yellow tufts of happy flowers that can be seen everywhere in early spring. But there is more than just yellow, and what even fewer people know; there is more than just big. Narcissi also come in miniature sizes in many colors and shapes.
There is the pumilus , its name already gives it away a bit that it is not very big. Or the small, perky Roundita , a little rascal that does its utmost to look just as tough as its large yellow relatives. This while its flowers are barely the size of a sip of too strong coffee.
Also yellow but very different in shape is the Narcissus fernandesii , all cheerfulness on a stalk. Dozens of flowers of the brightest yellow are already smiling cheerfully at you early in the spring. And they smell nice too. In large parts of Spain and Portugal you can see it blooming lavishly in meadows, roadsides and lawns. How happy they must be there on the Iberian peninsula, we have to make do with the dandelion in the spring.
What also should not go unmentioned are the so-called 'hoop skirt' daffodils, what sweethearts. I always get happy when they are in full bloom with their many flowers at our nursery. The leaves of these daffodils are modest, a bit grassy, which makes them extremely suitable for the rock garden. After flowering, they do not disturb the rock garden or border with lush leaves.
If you really want to see charming Daffodils in miniature you should try Angel's Breath or Tazetta subsp. tazetta . An unimaginable amount of gracefully dangling flowers on thin stems that also smell nice.
Slightly larger in size but still a really small Narcissus is the strange Rataplan . A narcissus that amazes everyone with its serious but oh so nice deviation. You have to see it to believe it. This is just a selection from my assortment, if you want to see or know more of these sweet little narcissus take a look in our webshop.
