My three favorite flower bulbs.
If you were to ask me what I consider to be the best flower bulbs to plant in the garden, I would come up with the following species; the Narcissus is number 1, the Bluebell is number 2 and the Ipheion is number 3.
Narcissus Double Sunrise
It may surprise you that I do not mention the Tulip, the flagship of the Dutch flower bulb growers, in this list. Of course, the Tulip is by far the most planted in gardens. And rightly so, everyone loves the Tulip, it colours the gardens and makes people happy. I might mention it in my top three of the 'most beautiful' flower bulbs, but if you ask for the 'best' flower bulbs...
Narcissus 'Say Cheese'
The Narcissus at 1.
Of course the Narcissus is number 1. In my opinion, there is no more beautiful and reliable flower bulb to be found. The Narcissus feels at home everywhere and does it almost always. In every garden where it is planted in a spot where it is in the sun for at least half a day, it will return for years. Whether the soil is more clay, more peat or more sandy, it makes no difference to the Narcissus, it happily announces the spring every year.
If you don't have any Daffodils in your garden yet, there are over 100 different Daffodils available in our online store.
Hyacinthoides Excelsior
The Bluebell is number 2.
I especially love the blue wood hyacinth. Just like the Narcissus, I often see it return to the same spots for years. Once planted and settled, it blooms again every spring. Seemingly an indestructible bulb that does better every year without becoming too dominant. If you are going to try it for the first time, I recommend you try the Hyacinthoides (yes, that is its official name) Excelsior. Excelsior is the largest and in my opinion the most beautiful shade of blue.
Ipheion Alberto Castillo
Thirdly Ipheion. A somewhat lesser known bulbous plant but it is true, it naturalises like the best. About four years ago I feared my garden in the autumn before I started planting bulbs and then I scattered a lot of strange bulbs through the garden before tilling. They were left over from the web shop and there were so many that planting them would be far too much work. All in the wheelbarrow, scatter them and then the tiller over them. A barbaric planting method that I am sure should be punishable by a prison sentence in the eyes of real gardeners. But no one caught me and yes, there were certainly bulbs that were cruelly destroyed but the result was exceptionally good. Every spring Crocuses, Blue Grape Hyacinths, Glory of the Snow, here and there a snowdrop (there weren't that many of them in the wheelbarrow) and even species Tulips from the Aladdin's Carpet appear everywhere. But the bulb that comes back the best is the Ipeion. Especially the white Ipheion Alberto Castillo is unbelievably good. Really, plant her in your garden, here and there a tuft of 10 bulbs, and you don't know what you'll see in a year or so. What a grateful bulb this is.
There are plenty of flower bulbs to be found in our webshop, feel free to surf around. Even if you don't order anything from us, enjoy all those beautiful bulbs.
Kind regards,
Carlos
