Dahlias in abundance
What wonderful weeks these were, I have never seen the Dahlias so massively so beautiful. Many plants were lashed by the bright sun but not the Dahlia. The Dahlia enjoyed the sun to the fullest. The Dahlia comes from Mexico, she loves it, the Dahlia is happy with sunshine and she showed it. I shot more than a thousand photos, one more beautiful than the other. Every Dahlia flower was equally beautiful, I have been everywhere where Dahlias were and when you read this I hope to be in Raalte where the annual show of the Dutch Dahlia Association is being held this weekend.
The Tulperij
But honestly, I enjoyed the Dahlia show garden at De Tulperij in Voorhout the most. There are so many varieties there and they are so neatly maintained by Anja and Daan Jansze, a real pleasure to walk through. And they are such nice people. Daan often comes to chat with me when I am there, after all he is also a bulb grower so we always have something to chat about.
Daan and I, what a hard life we have ☺
The best thing is just to listen to Daan, always full of nice stories about everything and anything he experiences in his Dahlia show garden. There are people like that, you probably know them too, you put a quarter in and for two euros it makes a sound. What happened to that Café au Laît Daan? There are no flowers left. Yeah, no, there used to be a nice girl who used to come here and pick Dahlias in our picking garden. You could tell right away, she knew what she was doing. She managed to pick incredibly beautiful bunches of mixed Dahlias, colours, shapes and flower sizes all in perfect harmony. Still, I had a quick chat with her. It turns out she is the florist of the Royal House, our Royal family is crazy about Dahlias . So that's nice to hear too. And the Café au Laît ? Yes, she wanted them for a special occasion, a heavy delegation from Korea came to visit the embassy and the Royal Couple had asked to make something beautiful with Dahlias . And she wanted these, she liked the Café au Laît the most. 'Pick them all' said Daan. This is a show garden but everyone knows this kind anyway. And by the way, if you don't know the Café au Laît after all these years you are a real sad sack, make a beautiful flower arrangement with it.
And this Daan, what are these deep tracks in the paths? Has Eric been there? No, haha, it wasn't Eric. Photos with cows, yes really yesterday we had a cow shoot between the Dahlias . Very small ones, never seen before. No not calves, real mini cows. And Daan just keeps grumbling while Anja with a straw hat and a big smile serves apple pie slices, Caprese toasts and cups of coffee on the cozy terrace that is full of vases of Dahlias and trendy flower arrangements.
But ho ho, let's get down to business. I'm accusing Daan of being a talker, but I'm no better myself. I'll show you a few Dahlias that you can buy new from us next year. Not yet, but if you like them, you can leave your email address and our computer will automatically send you an email as soon as they are available online.
I can actually think of the product texts right away, then that's done too.
Peaches
Wow, what a beautifully shaped Dahlia and what a lovely cuddly colour. Don't confuse her with the much more colourful Peaches & Cream which radiates a much sunnier atmosphere with her orange-yellow. No, Peaches is chic posh; refined in shape and sublime in colour. A Dahlia for a place of honour in your garden.
Tartan
Don't miss this Dahlia Tartan. Almost all Dahlias do their utmost to attract attention with bright colours and subtle shapes in combination with the most beautifully shaped flowers and then suddenly there is the Tartan. Her dark red does not really try to be red, it even borders on black, her white flutters through it disorganisedly and her flower shape is something like I don't know, just do whatever, just bloom away. And she is still a lot beautiful. More striking than all other Dahlias together and for such large flowers quite a rich bloomer too. I am going to plant her in my garden.
Black Pierre
Toppertje, a grateful Dahlia with a deep dark color, rich bloom and a healthy grower. A beautiful addition to the color palette in your garden or in the bunch of summer flowers. If people ask what her name means, don't translate it because you will end up in a discussion you don't want to be in. Just plant it and enjoy it, that's what the Black Pierre is for.
Dusty Beauty
Dusty Beauty
You come across them every year, those Dahlias that you know at a glance, yes, that's going to be it, that's what people want, that's 'hot'. They are those Dahlias where everything is right; colour, flower shape, name, height... everything is spot on. This dusty beauty is one of those. I don't care about the dustyness, I'm going to plant her.
Isn't it beautiful?
Liquid Desire
I always secretly remain a little in love with these so-called 'collar' Dahlias. The open character and the simplicity in the flower shape with those subtle swallowtails on the petals and then also always that buzzing of the many bees around her flowers. I just love to see these nice happy Dahlias . A nice tip immediately comes to mind; if you don't like bees at all, just buy a few to give to the neighbors... the bees are there in the garden. Furthermore, I can't say anything sensible about her name Liquid Desire... Cheers!
Lady Darlene
This colorful lady likes to change color. As a young girl she is as fresh and cheerful as the rising sun. As she gets older she starts to look like a sultry sunset where the pink does her best to push out the evening red.
Lady Darlene
This fantastic Dahlia Lady Darlene is proof that both youth and old age have their beauty. A delightful melancholic Dahlia with large flowers that love to show themselves.
Nina's Choice
A Dahlia that is not ashamed to stand out with her fresh look, happy color and rich bloom. What an eye-catcher. I can understand why Nina chose her, she is there. You can't ignore her.
Kind regards,
Carlos van der Veek
